Coping with Your Emotions During and After Divorce

Here is a guest post by Natalie Cruz, who uses Expressive Arts Therapy to help families cope with the stress of divorce. Enjoy!

The end of a relationship can be an overwhelming experience for the whole family. Many women describe their emotions shifting from anger, hurt, disbelief, anxiety, deep sadness, rage, and shame all the way to feelings of relief and liberation. Friends and family can be an excellent source of comfort and support during this time of transition. Some women also find it beneficial to process and explore their feelings in a professional therapeutic setting.

Divorcing women have often sought my support with:

  • Mourning the loss of their relationship
  • Developing a new sense of identity
  • Learning healthy co-parenting strategies
  • Managing emotions and self-care
  • Supporting their children’s emotional needs
  • Accepting their new economic reality
  • Navigating social relationships

As an Expressive Arts Therapist, I work with individuals and families to cope, heal and grow. Everyone in the family is affected by the separation and is building their life anew. I help people of all ages talk about the things that matter most in their lives and re-connect with their creativity as a tool for emotional expression, self-discovery, and healing. I believe in the healing power of the arts and feel blessed to witness people’s lives changing for the better every day.
