Don’t Make This Divorce Mistake

||

Whether you are thinking about filing for divorce, or already have, you may be a bit overwhelmed with all the paperwork and emotional turmoil involved. Divorce is not an easy process by any means. The loss of your marriage, stress, and difficulty coping for you and possibly your children, along with the financial implications make it one of the most challenging life events someone can go through. It is easy to get wrapped up in the whirlwind of negativity and fall deep within a self-loathing hole. This is one of the biggest mistakes clients make.

Take Care of Yourself

The number one mistake many people make during a divorce is a complete lack of self-care. The social stigma of divorce makes it hard to ask for help. However, you need to take some time to really listen to what you need. If you are having a tough time coping, you should seek the help of a counselor or therapist. Pick up a healthy coping skill like yoga or meditation. Take long bubble baths or treat yourself to a night out with friends once a month. Taking a few minutes to really take care of you will reward you with the ability to sail through a divorce much more efficiently.

Avoid Conflict

While divorce may be inherently full of conflict at some capacity, it doesn’t have to be a constant theme. Work with your soon-to-be-ex to establish a healthy foundation of respect and trust you can use moving forward. Just because you aren’t romantically involved anymore doesn’t mean you can’t be nice to each other. Work with a mediator rather than attorneys to promote peace and lessen divorce conflict.
